Everything you need to know about Maine Coons
Here at The Cat Life, our middle child is called Biggy (short for Big Cat). He's a Maine Coon. You can tell from his bushy coat, tail and size!
So why are they called Maine Coons?
One of the worlds largest domesticated cat, they originated from the US State of Maine. Often referred to as the "Gentle Giant" they are super social and friendly. Even my neighbours across the street are on first name terms with Biggy!
Maine Coons are also closely related to the Norwegian Forest Cat which has adapted and evolved to live in cold weather climate.
So How Big Are Maine Coons?
At his last health check with the vets, Biggy weighed in at 6.5kg. They can weigh from around 5-8kg naturally.
Fur Coat
With a long soft silky coat, they uniquely have shorter hair on their heads, and longer hair on their undersides to protect them from snow and ice in colder climates. They have a soft and light undercoat.
Their long bushy tails can be curled around their face for extra warmth protection!
They have large paws which act like snow shoes with extra tuffs of fur to keep their toes warm!
They can have a range of different coat colours just like other cats.
They regularly groom to keep their coats clean and free from matting. Biggy loves bathing himself and washing his face.

Personality
Often called the Gentle Giant, Maine Coons are very social. They are known for being loyal, independent and very loving. They form strong bonds with their humans and fellow feline brothers and sisters.
They are also very vocal!

Biggy loves making chirping noises at night after he's eaten to let us know he's ready for bedtime cuddles. He lays in bed making chirping noises until you give him head rubs and belly tickles. He'll then fall asleep and wake you up in the night with his loud snoring!
He meows non stop in the morning until you give him his breakfast, and always chirps when he enters the room to let you know he's making his grand entrance!
Food and Diet
They eat the same cat food as every other cat, although due to their size they require larger portions. Biggy loves running around so he uses lots of energy and requires the extra portion sizes to keep him energized! Although care must be taken to ensure they don't become overweight.
Biggy has health checks at the vets every 6 months along with his yearly vaccinations. He loves getting a fuss from the nurses and vets and likes to show off how beautiful he is. When he's not playing he's usually sleeping and lounging all over a human.
His hobbies are demanding cuddles, demanding food, demanding to play outside, and sleeping on his favourite beds.
